“There are a lot of people in our communities who are being overlooked and who are working to save our community, risking their lives. They need protection. Hence, it is our responsibility as entertainers and producers to raise money to draw awareness and help those in need. I am grateful to EVERYONE who tuned in to the show, and to my friends who have kindly participated in the show,” said Russell Simmons, President of Gushcloud International and Founder of Def Comedy Jam.

“In difficult times like this, we hope to still be able to put a smile on people’s faces through comedy, as we have for decades now,” he added.

The goal of the Def Comedy Jam live stream was to raise funds to provide basic needs for essential workers in vulnerable and underserved communities in New York, the epicenter of the COVID-19 disaster within the United States. Supplies include items such as hand sanitizers, masks and more. New York accounts for 42 percent of the virus-related deaths in the United States, and hospitals in the city have been overwhelmed with cases. 100% of proceeds will be used to benefit individuals in inner-city communities, specifically targeting the comedians’ hometown of Queens, which has been highlighted as the most affected area in New York.

“At Gushcloud, one of our key values is positivity. We are humbled to be part of this program as we brought together some of the world’s biggest comedians and entertainers to provide laughter and positivity during this period of crisis. Our goal was to leverage on technology to help bring people closer together during this difficult time,” said Althea Lim, Group Chief Executive Officer of Gushcloud International.

Funds contributed will be received and managed by Rush Philanthropic, a 501(c)3 tax deductible non-profit organization. Distribution efforts will be coordinated with partner community-based organizations including LIFE Camp, Inc. led by Erica Ford, with support of a network of various organizations within the New York Metropolitan area. Supplies purchased and collected will be distributed amongst essential workers specifically in Queens, New York and in other affected communities.

“Healing Through Laughter” was produced by Jeru Tillman, Erica Ford (LIFE camp, Inc.), Gushcloud, O'Neal McKnight, Bob Sumner, Althea Lim, Hasaun Muhammad, Russell Simmons, and Rush Philanthropic.
